- Rants..... essays, and other ramblings.
Well hello everybody. What am I thinking nobody comes to this site. well maybe a couple people. anyway, I just got back from a walk around my naighborhood. I have been shut in for the winter and also out of depression I guess. Over the world situation and all, but I need to get out of my funk and do something. The world won't change by itself. But anyway back to my walk. I was walking around my naighborhood just looking around. It's kind of a mixed hood a lot of gays, of which I am one, but I would say mostly liberal people. But as I look around I saw many images of flags in various displays. And I thought, patriotism is not puting a sticker of an American flag on your car, or a syrofome ball with red white and blue stars and strips on your antena. Or a Power in pride bumper sticker on your back window. It's not even flying a flag off of one of those idiotic things you stick on the window of your car or out in front of your home on a pole. Patriotism is believeing in the real ideals that go behind the flag and fighting for the Bill of rights and the Constitution and knowing that if the government is trampling on those things that we need to get off our collective asses and let them know we don't like it. Patriotism is believeing in free speech, freedom of assembly, and a right to tell the government we think they are wrong. Patriotism is actually knowing how your government works, who your congressperson is and your senator, and knowing how and what they vote for and against and letting them know if you agree or disagree, and not just when you vote, but by writeing them letters and calling them. The apathy in this country astounds me. I bet most people don't even know there senetor or congresspersons name, or how to write them or call. And most of us don't care. We just wait until the elections roll around and we listen to the never ending liteny of bullshit political comercials and make our decisions based on that. What a big 'ol bunch of sheep this country has become. You can tell by the way we jump on the next best fad. Nike airs, Monster trucks, Low riders, baggie pants, tight pants, bunjie jumping, and stickers of American flags. I could go on and on. And now because of that sheep mentality we are in yet another war for "fictious reasons" as Micheal Moore put it at the oscars( I love him) he won for best documentay film, Bowling for Colobine, everyone should see it. But patriotism is about that too, being able to stand up at the Oscars and say what you want. It's about all the people in this country who had the guts to stand up in the sixties and say no to Vietnam, and all the other bullshit that was going on. And it is all the people who have the guts now to stand up and say this war in Iraq is wrong. These are the true patriots fighting for our freedom. So anyway have nice day be good to eachother. Peace Irey
